Spindle Knob

I bought a used 1987 Mark V, and everything seems to be working just fine, except, I noticed the spindle knob cannot be removed. It looks like somebody tried either vise grips or a pipe wrench, as some of the knurls are sheared. The set screw can be removed completely. Is the spindle knob left handed thread? I can move the spindle slightly. Any suggestions? Do I need the spindle removed for any reason in the future?
