The last question I asked about using a ss as drill press was helpful but
I am having trouble with a couple of things. What speed should the
machine be in a to z and I can not get the chuck to move forward
when I try to move the quill feed handle,also the I believe on the right
side is a knob called the feed stop, it does not move, has marking's
0 to 4.The ss is a 1980 mark v. I have no other accessories with it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Unit was given to me if it don't
work no bigthing,also I should ad motor does run fine and speed control
works. thank's.

Motor runs fine and speed control works. I would say that you are almost in the business of making sawdust. I suspect that you have the quill locked and that is why you can not move it in/out with the handle.

The speed at which you run for drilling is somewhat dependent on what you are drilling but whatever it should be slow. I would suggest you start at B or C.

The quill lock should be labeled on the handle but, if not, it is shown in the attacked image in the upper right hand corner. The lock directly opposite the quill lock (other side of headstock) is the depth lock.

To add just a little bit (no pun) - After you loosen the quill lock, also loosen the depth lock. Then extend the chucked up drill bit to the piece you want to drill - set the the depth control (numbers 1 to 4+ in inches) to the depth you wish to drill and lock it at that position. You should now be ready to go.

At the risk of repeating much of what has already been said:

The quill shaft extends out both sides of the headstock.

There is a large 'wing nut' on each end.

The wing nut on the side where the speed control dial is located functions as a quill LOCK. The lock prevents the quill from moving in or out of the headstock.

The wing nut on the opposite side is the quill STOP. This provides an ADJUSTABLE stop for limiting the extension of the quill out of the headstock.

Behind the quill stop wingnut is a dial calibrated from 0 to just over 4 inches. When that dial is set at 0 AND the quill stop wingnut is tightened, the quill will not extend further from the headstock. By loosening the quill stop wingnut, the dial can be set to a different position. The range of extension of the quill out of the headstock is 4 1/4". Thus the max extension is obtained when the dial is set to 4+(maxed ) when the quill is fully retracted.

At any position of the quill, the amount of additional movement can be set on the dial(depth). Keep in mind the max extension will always be less than or equal to 4 1/4".
