Welcome Steve. According to Dusty you are lucky and have a Shopsmith that is Off the Chart. :)

Thanks for the greating, I guess what I am really after would be replacement part. Can I up grade to any fence, table, andhow do I know what speed control arms and wheel to order If I don't know the year. Does this matter? The ss works find In slower speeds but inin higher speeds it sounds like metal to metal some where, I think its the speed control because its really worned down. Also can I used the newer router attachments with my SS? Sorry for all the nebbie questions!

Based on my extrapolation of the date table on the Shopsmith website, your machine was manufactured in September of 1989! That's not right. :D

To be more helpful, what color is your MKV? Green, brown, light gray or dark gray (did I get 'em all in?). As for the upgrades, yes, you can upgrade the table, fence and carriage system up to a 520. If you call SS customer service at 1-800-543-7586, they will walk you through it.

As for the metal-to-metal sound, it may not be your speed control. The guys on this forum are GREAT at diagnosing problems like this. Let me ask a few questions to get started.
1. When you say the speed control is worn, do you mean the gear teeth on the quadrant, item #86 as seen in this diagram, or some other part?
2. Have you performed a high-speed adjustment?
3. Does is sound like rotating metal-to-metal, a ticking sound, or sliding metal?
4. Have you cleaned and lubed the sheaves?

You MISSED this part.

"From Dec 1987 until now, MARK Vs have date codes."

I didn't MISS it. That's what you get when you extrapolate! :D I noted that wasn't right. There's a saying about lies and statistics that I think is applicable here.:p
