I am looking at a jointer a guy has for sale, but can't find the place at Shopsmith.com to search for serial numbers (except for Mark V itself)

Anyone have that link? I think in the past I have found it for each of my accessories, but tonite am drawing a blank.

from the photo, I am pretty sure the serial number is 012291

also, the serial number label says [Joiner "C"]. what is the significance of the letter C?

This really makes more sense than a unique sn for each unit.

Consider why we attach significance to the sn. We want to determine how 'old' it is! The date 'sn' eliminates the need to 'look it up'.

Most places that need to keep track of 'assets' assign their unique asset id to things anyway!

It does look to be in good condition. If it has been in Arizona all its life, we know why. This climate, though not perfect, is so much better for items that rust.

My old Airstream didn't do so well here but that may have been the result of previous exposure. I bought it here but I found evidence (documentation) that it had spend some time (don't know how much) on the east and gulf coasts.

BTW, I disagree with JPG's comment about date codes making more sense than unique identifiers but that doesn't make a whole lot of difference. Nobody asked me for an opinion statement when they made the change.

The '54 Greenie I have came with a matching green jointer with a 12xxx serial number. Does anyone by any chance have the numbers for Jan-March of '54 from Magna? It'd be cool to possibly put a month on the assembly date of this machine.



And yes Dusty, Arizona has been awesome on this markV, but I don't suspect it was ever in a shop with swampcoolers. My metalworking lathes and mills at work are a pita to keep rust free during the summer. haha

That depends on the XXX portion.... Which month is yours depends if it was earlier than the last serial number made in the month which is what they list. You can extrapolate the month from those last 3 numbers.

If it's after 12853, then March it is.

Since they were averaging 800 - 1000 units a month, you can estimate the week number based on where your number falls. Not exact, but close.

I was curious for the numbers of Jan, Feb, and March of 1954... not '80. This is a '54 Magna. Green, not Grey.
