I've had my Dad's "greenie" for about 15 years and decided to buy a newer version (1980+) off eBay. The machine is in great shape, but when I looked carefully at the rip fence I noticed that it didn't clamp over the back edge of the table because the table appear to be too thick. I tried my old rip fence with the same result--and they both clamp fine on the old table. Did Shopsmith change the thickness of the tables slightly on some model years (it appears to be about 1/8")?

I suspect that I know what has happened but I'll reserve my guesses until I know more about what you had and what you now have that does not seem to fit.

From infeed edge to outfeed edge - how long are your tables.

It sorta sounds that way except for the discussion about both rip fences fitting the old table.

Someone more knowledgeable than I about the 500 tables and fences needs to jump in here. That person should not be hard to find because I know very, very little about the 500.

I know the tables are smaller.

Pictures would help. I have a Greenie and a 87 model Mark V 500 and my rip fence's will work on both of them. The only thing that won't work on both tables is the miter slot table extension.

I have checked three different 'vintages'(Greenie, Goldie, Gray) and both the rip fences and the tables are the same(on the back edge).

The back lip is 1" but has a chamfer on the bottom edge.

All three of these fences are not the 'newer' 500 fence that has the t-slot on top.

Make sure the offsetting screws are fully retracted in the front casting of the fence(s).

Need pix to see just what is the 'situation' with yours.

Is that extension a greenie vintage? IIUC the later version fits both the greenie extruded lip and the later extrusion lip.

Thanks for all the replies to my question. I've only used one Shopsmith before (for about 50 years), but the new one I bought looks the same (including the table). I'm not sure if my pictures will show up--I don't see them in the preview.

The pix are fine.

Now tell us 'what is what'?

You indicated you had 'differences' between old/new.

Both pix are 'normal'. That is the way it clamps.

Wow! Then there's something wrong with the old table (that my Dad and I used for 50+ years), because the clamp goes completely over the table on the old Shopsmith. If this is the way its supposed to be I guess I'm content...
