Under Mark V 520 Storage

I read this forum often and have learned a tremendous amount from you all. I don't usually post because I don't feel like I can contribute much. This is something I've built with input from various threads on this and other forums. I thought this might be of help to someone who is contemplating this project.*

I wanted a place to store all the various accessories as I had outgrown my accessory shelf. I wanted as much storage as possible, without taking up much more room than original footprint of SS including the larger 520 table. I didn't want to hang it from the SS and wanted it to be free standing. I wanted to be able to lower the support tubes full down, but still use all the available space. I added the removable drawer on the left side as the carriage doesn't go that far over, so that was wasted space. The other wasted space was under carriage, so I added a narrow,*hanging downdraft box that fits between the carriage support tubes. This helps keep the area cleaner when turning and sanding pens.*

As the project evolved, I found I had room to store all my SPT's on top and behind the SS, while sacrificing only a few inches of room from the wall. The SPT's had previously hung on the wall, but I wanted that space for cabinets. The cabinet is built out of 3/4" plywood except for, small inside drawers out of 1/4" plywood, doors out of 3/8 beadboard scrap. There are two braces running the width underneath made out of 3" strips of 3/4 ply. Just for additional support. I added small drawers in between these supports to take advantage of all usable space. Strip sander and belt sander belts fit in here very well.*

I don't have any drawings, but here are the dimensions.

Under Shopsmith Cabinet overall dimensions are:
48"w x 25 3/4"d x 13 5/8"h w/4" casters 17 1/4" h

Inside dimensions 46 1/2"w x 25"d x 12 1/8"h

Drawer box on top left 20"w x 25"d x 4"h

With everything mounted, distance from front of SS legs to wall 28-1/2" w/ table off.

Very, very nicely done! Great use of space and I like the downdraft drawer idea.

I did something very similar 20 years ago when I got my Shopsmith. My cabinet is built out of cheap plywood, and is on wheels so I can roll it out of the way when I'm using the Shopsmith. It holds all my accessories, blades, sandpaper, and some junk that probably shouldn't be in it.
