I see a 'greenie' advertised locally, really cheap. I have a 510 headstock and wonder if it will fit on the waytubes of the greenie? I plan to shorten it and make it a dedicated machine. I see a lot of you restore and customize older Shopsmith's, my only concern is will my headstock fit. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. rcf

Not a problem, it will fit. I have a power metal bandsaw if you want to shorten the tubes. I have a dedicated Shopsmith for tube sanding and polishing. Contact me if you desire any help or have any questions. Just off I-4 east of Tampa.

Ok I have a question here how can you polish and sand tubes on a SS that you have shortened.

I was planning on using two 1 3/4 " muffler pipe from my friends muffler shop. and make my ER longer so I can clean up and polish my way tubes. These pipes are 10 ft long and fit the headstock perfectly.

It may not be as 'stout', but 1 1/2" EMT is very close to 1 3/4 od.

I am curious how much 10' of muffler pipe is worth?

I machined an adapter plate to fit a metal lathe chuck on the 5/8" quill shaft. When using a SHORTY, if the tube is bent, vibrations can be out of control and dangerious. I find about 25% of the tubes are bent when using this setup.

For me its free because I will use it and then return it to the shelf.

But I believe it is $3 or $4 a foot or some where around that.

If you replace the ER way tubes with 10' tubes, how are you going to support the 52" way tubes on the extended ER for polishing? Mount a tailstock/support on the table/carriage?

I plan to put the head stock near the end so the weight of it is supported by the base supports. then I have a part that looks like the one in the picture of the shorty which I believe is a center point holder for the lathe. I will set it up to end of the way tube with a inserted expansion plug. that will be on a bearing and attacked to the center point housing.

I will also put a expansion plug in the drill chuck and then turn the way tubes like on a lathe.

Good luck finding a 1 3/8" plug!;)
