The Davis Shopsmith Journals

Post by ricknwood »

There has been alot of talk lately about the new educational programs available through Shopsmith, so I would like to make an announcement about a new series of DVD's that will soon be available. This is a great time for Shopsmith owners and I hope between Nicks's endeavors and mine, all of your needs can be fulfilled. First I would like to introduce myself to those of you who may not have met me at the Traveling Academy. My name is Rick Davis and I have been a Shopsmith Traveling Academy instructor for the past 4 years. I was hired to replace Susan Reed and later Doug Reed. I have mostly been teaching in the 11 Western States but have also taught in the South, Southeast and Midwest. Here are my credentials. I have 48 years in woodworking doing everything from building Japanese homes, historical restoration for the state of California, run international entry company, (Feather River Wood and Glass), owned furniture business's, cabinet shops and so on. The DVD project will be called, "The Davis Shopsmith Journals", and will cover all subjects that can be done with Shopsmith, which is everything. The first one will be "Maintenance and Alignment of the Mark V" and will cover everything on the Mark V. The series will consist of 8-11 DVD's or possibly more depending on the interest. This is my project and Shopsmith will be marketing it. The first one will be ready for release in about 30 days. PLEASE do not contact Shopsmith as yet about this as the folks in customer service don't have the info. I have spared no expense filming. We have purchased High Def cameras and will be switching to that format on the second one when most everything will have changed to that format. I have hired one of the best Videographer's in Northern Calif to film the series. His name is Brian Peterson and he is a major contributing editor to Video Maker magazine and has done projects for Disney and many other major Corps. I hope to have all of the series completed within two years. I still teach for the Academy so have to work around my scheduling. If you would like more information, post or contact me directly. Thanks to all of you who have supported me in the past, Rick Davis

So, here comes the obvious question. How does this relate to the sawdust sessions?

I'm confused now.

This is in no way related. This is my private project.

Rick,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'd certainly like to learn more and I am indeed interested. It sounds like you are moving faster than the folks at Shopsmith who have publicly stated they intend to offer the same thing. Unless this is what they were referring to. I guess it will come down to making purchase decisions based on the content and comparing what is available on the free webcasts vs the paid DVDs.

I always figured I would eventually pay for DVDs of the sawdust sessions if they were offered, even if I had actually watched the session online. The live session has value around the Q&A. But being able to have an archive of those session in higher quality to watch at my liesure without dealing with the internet is certainly worth something (don't ask me how much I'd pay because I'm not sure) and Nick and Drew seem headed in that direction as near as I can guess.

Now it seems there will be a choice.

Paul, I think you will find the two will not over lap much. Mine will be all chaptered and will cover one subject on each Dvd from beginning to end. Here's and example. I have been asking my classes what the second one should be after the Maintenance and Alignment and by far it is kitchen cabinets. I have owned a cabinet business for 30 years and pretty much know alll the ins and outs. So it would cover everything from milling the rough lumber to the cope and stick doors, raised panels, dovetail drawers, molding and so on to complete a kitchen. From begining to end. So you would see an upper and base brought to completion. Please feel free to ask any questions. I am very excited about this project. Rick

Just wanted to say - "Attaboy, Rick!" I'm sure you project will be successful! This is just what the Forum was talking about last year! Folks wanted these set-up and adjustment videos and were struggling to find a way to make or obtain them. You will have solved a problem for many!

Best Wishes!

Thanks Chuck, yes Doug Reed and I were asked for years to do the Maintenance and Alignment one and it has just became possible of recent. The series is something that I made the decision to do from talking to our owners over the last 4 years. I believe this indeed will help our owners see the full potential of the Mark V, gain the confidence and actualize there dreams. Rick

Rick
Definitely caught my attention. I had Doug Reid a couple of times in my earlier travelling academies and he had asked then about what we thought in regards to making a video that we could have available to reinforce what we learned in the TA's. The sawdust sessions have been very informative, even with the issues of the slower speeds which take away from the viewing quality, however I am an advocate for more resources to continue my learning in the use of the SS and woodworking in general. I already am a charter member in the onlineshopclass and they are coming out with some good presentations to view. Mike Cobb is doing some of their videos and I had him on several occasions in the TA's Count me in and keep me posted when you have the first available one to purchase.

Hey Ron, I too think that the more knowledge we have about any subject makes us better. I didn't realize that Mike was doing some of the Onlineshop programs. I sent him a message. I haven't had much communication with him since he left Shopsmith. Glad to see him back in teaching. Thanks for your support, Rick
