Hi all, OK, so I scored another 10ER, for $100! It has no bench, and the previous owner was 'restoring' it. this is how come the quill spring is unattached at one end (the inside), and me with no idea how to get it attached and, presumably, spring. Oh, he also put the other end shaft (with the spline inside) in backwards, but I didn't want to point that out at the time. It also has a good set of knives and a live center (which I was about to spend other money on!).
So, anybody got any pictures or a video essay on how to get teh spring attached? I think I have figured out how everything else goes back, and the quill spline shafts need serious cleaning, and maybe a bit of scraping to smooth out what looks like a metal-to-metal incident in its past.

Not much different from a m5. Stud with head on quill shaft, flat spring with 'keyhole' shaped hole/slot for stud to slip into.
Tis on the outside of the headstock (operator side). There are sleeves on both sides that may be 'in the ididn't know where to put them box'!

My method for attaching that spring works pretty well for me. But this is one of those things that gives people fits!
Hook the eye onto the stud of the pinion shaft. Wind the spring as tight as you can and still maintain good control of it. It doesn't have to be super tight. You just want to be able to slip the bent end into the slit in the spring cover. Then use that cover to wind the spring some more until you can get the whole spring stuffed inside the cover. You don't want to suddenly let go of it at this point! Slowly let the cover unwind until it comes to its natural resting place.

I would start by putting the outer end 'in the slot' and while rotating the 'shell', insert the spring until the whole spring is in.
Then insert the shaft through the hole and slip the spring over the pin. It helps if the spring has a radius slightly smaller than the shaft, and is away from the rest of the spring(pulled in to the center).
M5 has a bit different housing(shell). There is a 10E and a 10ER version.

Spring
OK, I figured out that the Previous Owner (PO) had maybe broken the end of the spring off, and had drilled his own hole. He also had not set the bits on the shaft properly so the littel knob was nowhere near the spring. It is now in, and seems functional! Yippee! Still some things to deal with, like the mechanism to tighten the quill, that can happen this weekend. Thanks to all for the information and encouragement.
