2-1/4" Sanding Drum Sleeves - Sources?

Anyone find sources other than shopsmith for replacement sanding drum sleeves for the 2 1/4" sanding drum? I found them at supergrit:

Seems like the whole inch sizes are more common. Main goal would be to be able to buy abrasives locally when needed. I know one good option is to just get a regular set and either chuck up in the drill chuck or use the router arbors for them.

What have others done?

Same, I simply stock up. I have the same problem with the 6x48 belt. Just buy up a bunch from Shopsmith. The cheap ones on ebay...well, they are just that.

Have you actually tried the supergrit sleeves on the 2 1/4" Shopsmith drum? I ask because I just received some 2 1/4" sleeves from Klingspor and they are too small for the Shopsmith drum. Reluctant to order more generics and find they won't fit either.

Did you collapse the drum fully?

If not 2 1/4", what size were they?

Probably 2 1/4" with a Chinese ruler!

Maybe they got wet or saturated with salt water and shrank!:)

All right you guys, you're messing with my mind and it doesn't have a lot of space left for being messed. Maybe the Chinese did wet and salt them down, but I'm not even sure the Chinese made these. Whatever, the ones from Klingspore are a little smaller. The I.D. on the ones from Klingspore measure aprox. 2.247. The ones from S.S. measure aprox. 2.331. That is a difference of about 1/16 th". The S.S. drum doesn't like being squeezed that much. In fact, it's pretty beligerent in it's refusal to cooperate. So, I'm back to my original question of Damagi, Have you actually tried to fit Supergrit's sleeves unto the S.S. drum? And did they fit?

If that is all that it is too small try compressing the rubber drum for a while with the drum fully released. One way is with a bicycle inner tube. Cut it on each side of the stem then use it to "tightly" wrap the drum, stretching it as you wind it. When tightly wrapped put a couple of wraps of tape to hold it in place and let it sit a while.
Another way is to wrap it with electrical tape stretching it "very" tightly and letting it sit a while.
When unwrapped put the new sleeve on quickly before it can expand back out.
A more sophisticated approach would be to bore a hole a tiny bit smaller than the rubber drum through a wood block then saw the block in half and use clamps to clamp it around the rubber drum to compress it.

Once upon a time before this forum was created I belonged to yet another shopsmith group(no longer around). This subject came up and NO ONE found a place to get the proper size sanding sleeves. They can say the right size but they do not fit.

Now that was a few years back so things could have changed. I wasted money as did several other people trying different brands/sellers.

It is not the fact that I dislike shopping shopsmith but they do have a very limited grit selection. I'd like to find someone who could supply more then the three we now have an option for.

I as many other wait for sales and stock up. I'm wasting a lot of drawer space this way but I felt I had no choice. I haven't priced them in a long while, and still will not have to this year I don't think, but it seems to me they were in the area of $2 each so waiting and stocking up when they were less(on sale) that would at least save you some pocket change.

I have 3 drums one for each of the three grits so I can change out like I do with the disk sanders. Well I really have more drums but that is another story.

If someone happens to find one that slips on like the shopsmith version and has more grit choices and might be cheaper then I'd like to here about it, not going to stay awake at night thinking about it nor am I going to do any more test buys... By the way if you do happen to force one of the small ones on, good luck when you try to get it off, from experience it wasn't fun. I've also had them blow a seam, never had that with the shopsmith ones.
