Prospective SS owner needs some help with ID
Hello All,
Thank you for letting me in your fine board here.
I am looking at purchasing a used Shopsmith. I was hoping I could get some help identifying the specifics of the unit.
The owner says the SN# is 83720.
Here is the CL listing url.
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/tls/2543818112.html
I'd also like to hear any comments or opinions on this model of SS or on the deal itself.
Thank you for your time,
PoP

That appears to be a Mark V model 500.
It looks like a bandsaw(older cast iron table), jointer and 6x48 belt sander.
I also see a mortising attachment, a molder head, several shaper cutters and many arbors and much I cannot tell what it is.
Question is, does it run properly.
If so it is probably a decent 'deal', but I would offer much less and see what develops.
That's one opinion.

It looks like a model 500 to me as well. My personal preferences lean towards a 510 or 520. This particular package is a little overpriced in today's market.
I have purchased 8 or 10 assemblies almost identical to this one. I generally pay $400 to $500 for packages similar to what you're looking at.
just less than my 2 cents worth

Pricing
WHile you are getting SPTs, you are also getting a 500 model not a 510 or 520, I think that this is a little overpriced also and think that a more fair price would be about $500. I bought a machine just like you a couple of years ago for the SPTs same as yours I paid $400 and felt it about right. Try to negotiate a better price.
Mark V 520,Mark V 510(2),Mark V 500(2) Dust Collector(2), Jointer(2), bandsaw(2), jigsaw, beltsander, biscuit joiner(2) Lathe Duplicator, RingMaster, Pro planer
I got super lucky on mine last spring at under $200.00 with 2 SPT.dan1999 wrote:WHile you are getting SPTs, you are also getting a 500 model not a 510 or 520, I think that this is a little overpriced also and think that a more fair price would be about $500. Since then I wish I had found one with the bigger better table system.
I am going to upgrade as soon as I find a deal on the upgraded table system.
I would think that set up in todays market is worth no more than $500.00 as others have already said. But you do what you feel is right for you, not abunch of old opinionated farts cyber-Smithing all day.

I sure hope I never have to give up my shop equipment to this bunch. You guys are cheap.
Even though mine is nearly twenty years old, it has been cared for and works as good as when it was new and is worth almost what I paid for it. Who says inflation is a bad thing? If you consider how well it has been aligned - it might be worth more than what I paid for it. I live in a dry, warm climate with a relatively constant environment that does not support rust. A little wax and very little elbow grease and it shines like new too. Yeah, there are a couple scratches but a little touch up paint from Shopsmith and you'd never notice.
In about six-eight years, you all can have my shop equipment for around $8000. I'll throw in all the hand power tools to boot; just to show where my heart is.
Just don't come looking for all my Stanley stuff. One of the grand kids has spoken for that. It's about his speed too.

P.S. old opinions are usually based upon much experience!;)

Dusty - the orginal post said as follows:
I'd also like to hear any comments or opinions on this model of SS or on the deal itself.
Why would you want to be critical of those who offer him opinions? My thoughts are based on the purchase of many of these things. If he hadn't asked for an opinion, I would not of offered one.

I am so sorry! I thought that what I was doing was "giving my opinion". It was not my intention to be critical of those who offered an opposing opinion.
PS: Please do be aware that the typical "going price" is regional.
