Almost a disaster!

I was turning a 4" diam. leg on the SS last night, and the chuck/quill came loose and the leg went eccentric and coulda killed me! All is well, but I am concerned about the quill. It was only extended about a quarter of an inch, just enough to add pressure to the live end. Is the SS stout enough to take this abuse, without damage? Everything looks fine, but what is the acceptable runout on the quill? I have a dial indicator, so I can check it. Man, it scared the bejesus outa me when it happened! I was sanding at just a tad faster than the slowest speed, and not using a gouge at the time, so for that I was lucky! jimsjinx

With the quill assembly installed in the headstock and the Quill Lock Handle tighten, I look for a max of .002" runout. I find 20-25% of the quill shafts I check have .003 and greater runout. I replace the quill bearing first. Iif the quill shaft still has .003 or greater runout, then I replace the quill shaft.. This is only my opinion for my standard.
