Hoggin' wood

No, I'm not referring to the compulsion many of us suffer with a desire to save every scrap of wood we see, find, make or hear of. I'm trying to find a good method of removing wood on a little project. (Maybe hogging is a bit strong in this case.)

I'm making your basic wooden spoons, large spoons for stirring pots, with a fairly deep bowl on them. What I'm hoping someone can suggest is an easy way to carve out the bowl's insides.

Anyone got a good idea? Hurry, please, Christmas is almost here!! :eek:

I've hollowed spoons with a set of carving gouges. They look a lot like lathe tools but they are ground to a much finer angle and made of thinner stock.

Agree with a curving gouge. That's what my wife uses when she makes hers. Gets a lot of wood out quickly.

depends on how deep and how large.....you can always hog away with a fostner bit and then go smaller and smaller.....then chip away with your chisels....

Yeah, farmer, I had thought about something like this. Turns out the local Harbor Freight (yeah, I know, I hate sending money overseas too) has a very similar thing for less money and I could actually get it in time to finish this project before Christmas.

But I'm not convinced it's the way I'm going to go. In fact, I've been using a bowl bit in a trim router and hand hoggin' it. Admittedly, not the safest thing to do (but not the dumbest thing I've done lately either) but it's a rough start. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow.

Uh, look at the photo - it says made in the USA.
