Adding 2nd set screw to tail stock

Hi,

This was another great day, in that we were warm, 55 degrees was the high I saw and that is plenty warm enough for a shop project or two.

None of my machines are equipped with the tail stock that has two setscrews to hold the eccentric mount. I figured that today might be a good day to try and add a second setscrew.

I could see no reason why one couldn't just drill and tap another hole on the other side of the tail stock and then add a setscrew. In the image below the setscrews are item number 289.

This was a pretty easy task, the harder part was finding the angle and hole placement and a way of clamping it so it could be drilled.

It turns out the angle as measured with the tubes against the miter gauge was 55 degrees.

I used a 1/2" ish scrap of mdf under the tubes to stabilize the tail stock in a reasonable position so the hole would be horizontal. (I used the existing hole to determine this set up). When I was able get everything lined up both horizontally, vertically, and on the right angle and the drill bit in the proper position I clamped the parts down, and locked the miter gauge in the slot.

De burred entry hole and then tapped 5/16-18 through.

Cleaned up the chips and it was set for testing. After spending a good 10 or 15 minutes looking for a setscrew of like size and point I gave up. Got one out of another tail stock and gave it a try. Seems to work. Drilled a couple of test pen parts so it was a short test.

Since winter returns with inches of snow and temperatures in the 20 during the day and single digits at night I might not get to use this again for another two months.

You did this fancy. I just eyeball drilled it with my Dewalt. Been holding for three years.
