I went on Craigslist to browse around half-heartedly for a band saw and ran across a Shopsmith for sale about 15 miles from my house. I had never heard of the machine before but was intrigued once I saw the photo of it. So, for the last two days I have been scouring the internet trying to get up to speed with the machine and what a fair value for it would be. Well after some searching around I decided to take a chance on this machine. I got all of the stuff included in the photo for $650 which is cool since I didn't have any clamps, etc. From the serial/model number I gather it is a Mark V, 510 built on Jan 11, 1989.
Model # 555510
Serial # 011189
It also came with the vacuum, joiner, and band saw. It seems to be in great shape. Tonight I will start cleaning and waxing it before putting it to use...looks like I'll be reading the maintenance threads for the best suggestions on that. Anyway, this looks like a great forum and I am excited about contributing to it, if I can. Reading the posts last night until 2am really convinced me what a great tool I now have and I am excited to put it to use. Oh...and is that a genuine Shopsmith apron that came with it? You bet it is! :D And for Swampgator, I'm in Fort Walton Beach, FL right down the road from you...Go Gators.

Welcome to the forum!

Looks like a real steal for that price!

We will indeed be looking for more posts from you after you have her ready for making sawdust.

Start here.

Just in case it's not mentioned, NEVER turn the speed control unless the machine is running! ;) :D
Do the maintenance procedures and ENJOY!

BTW......you live in a gorgeous part of the world! This flat land desert rat could be a beach bum very easily:cool:

BTW #2: Go ahead and dump the blame on all of us. We have broad shoulders.

Congratulations !
Welcome to the forum.
We are very glad for you, I must have spent almost 3000$ in 1994 to buy what you just bought + the upgrades that I did to bring it to a 520.
I do not have the "vacuum" as you call it, also known as the DC3300 and the joiner, so I do not think the members would mind being blamed for your luck.
Again you did very well and keep us posted with your woodworking.

Welcome Brokenotbroken. I resemble that remark. :D Just be warned I did call the Sheriff as you made a steal of a deal. I have an old 500 I'll swap with you. Looking forward to your update posts. And, I'll look for you in the Florida Shopsmith owners thread. Great buy!
:D :)

Wow, I got a basic 500 with a bandsaw, jointer, and minimal blades/extras for about the same price. But then again I live in a ShopSmith starved area where what is available on craigslist tends to be a bit overpriced.

Nice find!
