I just brought a new to me Greenie home. Bought it from the wife of the original owner. In the paperwork is this letter. It appears, from the letter, that this was one of the first 1 1/8 hp motors. Cool. I am going through the rest of the paper work and will scan and post.

I find that very interesting! That is the first I was aware that any greenies had other than a 3/4 hp motor. Are you sure that is what the 'more powerful' meant? What is the sn of your greenie?
Goldies were made with a 3/4 hp motor up until the early sixties.

As the title of the thread states SN300060, it would have been made in July of 1955.

I will take the motor out of the headstock tomorrow and take pictures as I have to replace the cord on it as a minimum.

This is so cool. I can't wait to see this mystery solved. I love the OLD machines (since mine is a '55, s/n 292284).

Well JPG40504, you called it! I took the motor pan and belt guard off and took the motor out. As you can see in the picture, it is a took the motor out as you can see in the picture it is a General Electric 3/4 HP motor. The Control Sheave and the Idler Sheave were screwed together, because the teeth were GONE on the speed control knob. Here are some pictures.

I recommend getting the crank rebuilt. Those teeth do not control the speed, they merely cause the outer indicator ring to move. Watch for it on e-bay. He replaces the stripped cast aluminum gear teeth with a steel pinion gear.
Curious why the sheaves were screwed together. What else is funky with the speed control???

The bearing with the wire loop is missing off of the idler shaft, that would make it run at one speed or not at all with the sheaves being able to move at will. The sheaves being screwed together, made it run at a fast speed all the time. Do you have a link for the guy who rebuilds them?
a boy another rebuild!!

We love to watch someone new rebuild their machine, and help where we can. I consider this an opportunity to really know your machine and know where you stand with it.
Of course, most parts can be had off evil-bay. For example, item 250981985593 up for sale right now is a brand new speed control. You can also buy used ones, but need to ask questions about exactly the problem you see with your current one.
Of course, ebay is the epitomy of "let the buyer beware" and you have to be a smart shopper, else you end up paying more for used than new (like item 170769024030, a pair of adjustable legs already over $71!!!!)
I can't find the link you need offhand, but I like what I've seen of his work and think anyone would be really happy with his upgrade to the controller and it would definitely be a worthwhile investment in future satisfaction with what is already a great machine.
We love pictures!!
