SPT Configurations / Advantages of Mini's

In regards to the SS and SPT's
For future planning of STP purchases and variations of what people may have now, changes in manufacturing of new vs. older SPTs ect. I wanted a thread to clarify the configurations possible. Please help me fill in the "blanks" and I'll edit this first post.

All directional references made to the "front" of the machine being the power switch side.
Table saw-Right side only-feed from front
Drill Press Mode-Tilt Right side only-work from right end
Horiz Bore-Right side only
Sanding Disk-Right or Left side
Lathe Turing-Right side only
Lathe Chuck-Left side/upper drive fro sanding only
Planer-Left side/upper drive-feed from back
Jointer-Left side/lower drive-feed from front
Bandsaw-Left side/upper drive-feed from left end
Belt Sander-Right or Left side/upper drive-
Jigsaw-Left side/upper drive-feed front or left
Scroll Saw-Left side/lower drive-feed front
Strip Sander-Left side/upper drive-feed front Right side-feed from back
Grinder-Right side only /upper drive with guard in place Left side ok but no guard/wheel cover in place
Drum Sander-Right or Left/upper or lower drive

A Reversable Motor will enable all SPTS to mount on Right or Left side if they are upper drive only SPT's

Pretaining to minis, I understand there are 2 versions. Short-fixed and just shorter to some extent from the original.
If you had a short-fixed mini, what would be your favorite combinations or most useful? Consider you have a standard SS as well.
I know "it depends on what your interests are, but in general I'm just surfing everyones knowledge.
What are the most practical uses for just a shorter version than standard without being a true mini?

Belt Sander-Left side/upper drive- (Right side is ok?) Yes - drive shaft on both sides. Always feed from front as described above(or it will be running bas-ackwards).
Jigsaw- Left mount, upper shaft, feed left or front See below.
Scroll Saw Left mount, lower shaft, front feed
Strip Sander- Left or right mount - right mount reverses direction and 'feed' direction(from the 'back').
Grinder-either? With wheel cover etc., right mount only - no cover, either left or right.

Now things get muddy(opinionated).

Anything less than a full length is a mini/shorty, but mini is used for shorter ones. When too 'mini' there is insufficient space for the carriage and table.

The shortest I would consider is created by cutting a set of tubes(2 way or two bench) so each 'half' is 3/4" longer/shorter than the opposite end. That way only a single pair of way or a single pair of bench tubes are cut. Anything less mini(longer) requires a full set(2 way and 2 bench) of tubes.

I consider a mini to be an improved power station(greater speed range and power). It can also mount two SPT's at a time(not necessarity simultaneous operation). Thus it can be a storage rack.

Depending upon what project(s) were under way, A mini makes a nice sanding station(strip on one end, belt on the other) and capable of swapping one to a disk/drum as well.

A Band saw(left) and jig saw(right) is a possible combination.[The jig saw can be driven either direction]. The scroll saw needs the lower shaft, but is also bi-directional.

So you can see that the mini/shorty does give you many possible variations/combinations and dual mounting.

These are I am sure not the only possible uses/combinations.

I added addition capability by reversing of the AO Smith or GE motor for all the MINIs (25 5/8" way tubes) and SHORTYs (34" way tubes) I sold a few years ago. This gives the ability to mount most SPTs on either end.

My most wanted mini use is for a dedicated home for my bandsaw. I'm not sure yet which SPT I want on the other end but is has to be something that I don't have to move to have room to swing a board around at all angles while cutting on the band saw. I definitely want to just be able to just walk over to the bandsaw and start cutting.
Another mini is to be a sanding station with the belt sander on one end and a disk w/table on the other.
"Planning" (terribly loose word) is for my 510 to stay open for any use even as a table saw (95% of my table-sawing is on my Ridgid TS-3650) but if I have something special sat up on it I can use the 510 to make other cuts while leaving the setup intact until done. My Delta Compound miter-saw gets steady use for cut-off work.
My old Mark VII is planned as a semi-dedicated dado and box joint machine. Only a few simple jigs should be all it will need for that.
I have 2 restored Mark V's that will mostly stay stock except one "may" get the spare larger Mark VII table system.
The Frankensmith (Mark VII with Mark V headstock) is still intended to be a dedicated lathe.
The 10-ER will just remain a 10-ER "just because". I do have a 1HP 220V dust-proof AOM that might migrate to it but no hurry.

The real beauty of all of this Shopsmith stuff is that in most cases I can still disrupt almost any of these intended uses and switch and swap stuff around and do pretty much what ever I want on about any of them. That was the exact reason that I made the choice several years ago to base my shop around a bunch of Shopsmiths. Even the double drill press can be pretty flexible.

Without going out into the shop (it's 30-degrees out there right now) and looking, isn't the "backside" upper drive also a 5/8" shaft? If so, other than the inconvenient orientation to the drive control, couldn't you mount a chuck, disc, lathe drives on the "back end?" (Although, admittedly I can't quickly come up with a reason to do so.)

You could also mount the chuck or lathe drive on the idler shaft.

Whatca gonna use for a tool rest? Whatcha gonna use to feed the drill bit?:rolleyes:

Only the disc(and drum) sander makes sense of the three.]could [/B]mount a chuck/bit there, slide the headstock all the way to the left, and push the SS towards the wall and drill holes in the wall by rolling the SS into the wall!:eek:

I'm considering turning one of my 10ERs into a "short shorty". Swap the tubes with the Mark 5 base miter saw/planer stand, cut those tubes short, then mount it on a table low enough to roll under the center section of the counter on the back wall of my shop.
