Greenie does not speed up & stalls.

Post by mgdesigns »

2 years ago I bought a '55 Greenie that had been "refurbished". Well, the guy that refurbed it didn't put any keys on the shafts to keep the sheaves locked in place. So as soon as I put even a small load on a piece (i.e., sanding a pen blank) the quill stopped turning.

I ended up having to take the whole thing apart and "Re-Refurbish" it. It's been working fine for the maybe 15 hours of actual cutting time and lathe time I've put on it. But today I was using the table saw and cutting some oak dunnage into lumber for a TaeKwonDo belt display rack, when after cutting one thin slat and shutting down I restarted and it was stalled. Shut it off quickly so as to not burn anything up. The speed adjuster was on "K" for a higher speed, so I restarted and worked it down to "A" and the speed picked up around the sanding markers. So up I went back to "K" and cut the slats.

I saw some smoke, maybe dust, maybe rubber, maybe capacitors, who know. But I guess I'll have to re-tear it down and investigate what's bound up. When I manually turn the quill and try to adjust the speed dial down the middle pulley doesn't seen to be moving in and out, so maybe I have a gummed up shaft.

Does anyone have a good refurbed headstock assembly for sale cheap? Mine has a single bearing quill, and it's really murder to try to do turnings of any diameter greater than a couple of inches, and if the price was right, I would not have to tear this down again.
