Shopsmith leg and caster rust

We have discussed "the rust" streaaks here before. Mostly on the inside of the legs but sometimes on the outside of the legs as well. Of the 2 dozen+ used ones I bought I think every one of them had "the rust" streaks at least inside of the legs. On the ones I restored I used Rustoleum (hammer finish) to repaint. While they are not rusting as such I do notice signs of the streaks and the caster set parts are showing light rust.

I have decide to clean them up again but rather than JPW I am going to try spraying the legs and caster sets with a coat of clear acrylic. Has anyone else tried another solution?

When I first saw this forming on my new 510 years ago I was blaming the cats or other critter but it seems that those legs just sweat???

You may be right. All I know for sure is that it is not the tom cat leaving his mark. I no longer have critters in the shop but I still have signs of moisture on the Mark V legs. Strangely, it doesn't happen on the other equipment.

All of mine have the same marks and streaks etc. Except the new one that I bought in 1983. but I'm sure that I hunted it down today, it would be the same as all the rest.
Probably years of condensation running down the inside of the legs. which probably didn't get as much paint.

Interesting. When we moved into current home my mark V's and other tools were stored in an unheated garage for a few weeks. All tools had covers on them but one. Most of the covers went all the way to the floor. I was puzzled by rust streaks occurring on the uncovered tool and the under side of a couple of tools that had covers but only over top surfaces. I have experienced no rust issues in the new climate controlled shop. However have noted build up of grunge on tools left uncovered for extended periods of time. I am working at training myself to always cover every tool not in use. It really allows a much cleaner shop. On the other hand a pain in the posterior when desiring to use tools. Jim
