PROBLEM SOLVED! This is long winded. Hopefully someone else will find this some day and save himself some hassle. Thanks very much to all the guys on this forum. Greatly appreciate your help. Especially the pictures from Dusty and SDSSmith. They steered me in the right direction. I spoke to Linda at...

planer pulley alignment problem

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Appreciate the help. SDSSmith: Thanks for the photo. My planer looks very much like yours BUT the legs angle out away from the stand so much that the pulley can not be moved inwards enough to align with the cutterhead pulley if the cutterhead pulley is only 1/2 inch...

planer pulley alignment problem

SDSSmith, no such thing as a stupid question. I thought of that at first too, but, the horizontal position of the motor does not matter. The body of the motor is always inside the legs of the stand. The motor pulley is always outside the legs of the stand. So moving the motor itself horizontally doe...

planer pulley alignment problem

I've been working on getting a planer set up recently. I have exactly the same alignment problem with the pulleys on the Shopsmith planer. In my case I have a Mark V mount planer (circa 1983) and the stand, pulleys (5 inch and 3 inch), belt and motor from a relatively new Shopsmith Pro Planer. I do ...

Magazine opinions

I subscribe to several magazines. My opinions, briefly: Woodsmith - overall favorite. Great projects with detailed explanations. Great tips section. ShopNotes - similar to Woodsmith but all about jigs and shop projects. Wood - also very good projects. Does some good comparative tool reviews. Good ti...

ripping technique

"Never stand directly in front of or in back of the blade; always stand to one side or the other." and "Stand in front of the Mark V, on the opposite side of the blade than the rip fence. (This position will help you keep the stock pressed against the fence as you rip it.)" Is th...

from the safety rules: " Secure all locks." " Make sure the machine rests firmly on the floor when in use-not up on the retractable casters. " I'm a real novice but already I've noticed a tendency to forget the carriage lock. Run 2 or 4 pieces through, then discover the carriage ...

Fort Worth Class Great!

I was at the Fort Worth Traveling Academy with Carry this weekend. I second his enthusiastic recommendation. What a great class! Mr. Davis is a very good teacher. I took literally 100 pages of notes (OK, they are half sized pages) and still didn't get down everything. I am pretty much a newbie to wo...

Nick, I'm sure the OPR table works fine. Just curious and looking for some insight into the design decision. So much about the ShopSmith is designed to be useful in multiple configurations I don't see how much is gained with a separate table for the OPR. OTOH, the ShopSmith design has obviously been...
