Recent projects turned on the Mark 5 machine: a candle holder from mesquite and a kitchen utensil holder, made from local cedar. I found a guy selling cedar logs, so got 2 truck loads fr...

Re: New Guy

I love the grain in mesquite, especially after stain. I know it's a very hard wood, thus, hard to turn. I have been sharpening tools a lot more frequently. Yes, I've been turning for less than a month. Just watch videos and read. I practiced on lots of little pibe and fir 2x2's. Beads and coves and ...

PNW? What part?

It does look really good; you did a nice job turning it.

I am in Bonner County, North Idaho.

I'm familiar with the area. I retired in Western WA 2.5 years ago and moved to central Texas.
Thanks for the kudos. I have to go slow, since I'm a green horn.lol πŸ‘πŸ»

edflorence wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 4:43 pm Very nice ! That material looks like what we in the PNW would call "Tennessee Cedar" or "Aromatic Cedar", to distinguish from Western Red Cedar. Will look great when you oil it..
PNW? What part?

I just stained it. Boy, what a difference.

Project #2 cedar round bowl with drop-in lid (no tenon). Made this for Mrs.B. Still needs some sanding work and stain. It's amazing how 6 hours in the shop can whiz by!

Re: New Guy

Any suggestions on food grade protectant/stains for this? Looks good. Unless you have a nut allergy, I recommend walnut oil. Most woodturners use it for a food safe finish. The brand I use is Mahoney's (see link below). Hope you have a great Thanksgiving. https://www.rockler.com/mahoney-s-food-safe...

Re: New Guy

First completed project. A honey dripper made from Mesquite on my land. The video stated: "even a beginner can whip this out in 15 minutes". Took me 1.5 hours with 3 step sanding and I haven't stained it yet. Any suggestions on food grade protectant/stains for this? Thank you in advance an...

That's why you need to come to Waco and run my other machine! 😁 Make a list of the main things you want/need for your machine and I'll keep me eyes open down here too.

Re: New Guy

My first lathe experience was using 2x2 stock to turn in a garage of a similarly aged jr high friend. It was a craftsman belt drive with cone pulleys. Made a billy club with a large knot in the middle of it's length. Not very functional! Untried to this date - yes I still have it.(somewhere) JPG, o...
