Re: pro-planer issue
I am curious how often the 12" planers spin a pulley and how often cutter head bearings need replacement? I ask because I need to replace a bad pulley on my stand-adapted 12" planer that had two 3.5" pulleys (either zinc die cast or aluminum I cannot tell which). Several have suggeste...

Re: Horizontal boring for doweling
Whenever I have done horizontal boring I found that I had to clamp the work piece firmly down on the table. I use the Mark 500 fence to square the work but it is wholly incapable of backing up the work when drilling. I clamp a second piece behind the fence to provide further support. If I am doing a...

Re: Horizontal Boring made this table top possible
"But with the steel plate and all those screws, everything should stay put, even if hairline cracks do appear in the cookies." I am not too worried about cracks. There was movement during the build in that the cookies became convex on one side and concave on the other. Because my shop is s...

Re: Horizontal Boring made this table top possible
All the cookies were laid out to the best rectangular arrangement (distributed evenly for size and symmetry - 26 different tries!) and 2in painter's tape placed across the joints to be drilled. The tape was marked with two lines for the best position of the steel rods. Then the cookies were placed o...

Re: Horizontal Boring made this table top possible
I made a router sled to adjust the thickness of all cookies to 1.75 in. router sled.jpg Threaded rod was used to ensure that the epoxy would adequately hold the metal rods. Although the threaded rod was sufficient to maintain the planarity of the short dimension it turned out to be insufficient over...

Horizontal Boring made this table top possible
This table top relied on horizontal boring to place two steel rods between each cookie (i.e. cross-section) and two or three neighboring cookies. The steel rods were parallel and in the same plane. After final mounting, the pins were hidden by judicious placement and gluing of bark fragments. Could ...

Re: pro-planer issue
The current pulley cover is not long enough to accomodate a 5" pulley in either orientation. Seems that my choice is as John suggested buy a new 3.5 inch pulley and remain at 3450 rpm (motor speed) or alternatively decrease the cutter head pulley to a smaller size to increase speed? The pro pla...

Re: pro-planer issue
I should think before I post: The pulley guard on my stand will not accept a 5" pulley at the motor end, only at the cutterhead (which doesn't make much sense). So I I either need a different pulley guard or I stick with a 3.5 in pulley on the motor. I have pulley guard kits 513552 but these ca...

Re: pro-planer issue
Shopsmith no longer carries the 3.5" pulley. I decided to shift the good 3.5" pulley from the motor to the cutterhead. This pulley has a keyway that will not have a key just the set screw onto the flat taper of the shaft, that was the circumstance I found when the cutterhead pulley spun on...

Re: pro-planer issue
Reviving this old topic to ask about MV planer pulleys. I have a MV planer on a shopsmith stand (not pro planer). It is powered by a 1 1/2 hp AO Smith 3450 RPM. I have used it lightly but the last use gave a wrong noise that inspection showed was due to the cutter pulley having shifted on the shaft....
