I assumed you did not wish to recess the shelves into the opening. The 'false side' I was referring to would be parallel the the 'real side' when 'closed' and provide a mount for the hinge away from the wall(right side). I would hinge it off of the left from side of the bookcase. This might mean beefing up the wall to provide adequate support but that is what I would do.

Funniest part was the comment by the lady on the phone. I said I was not surpised it was gone quickly at that price and she said "I wish we had had 10 of them!"

I didn't bother telling her she could have asked $250 for that one, and still sold it in an hour!
