Have you considered having some HDPE plastic on hand for such repairs?
This is water bottle cap and detergent bottle plastic. Lots of youtube videos on recycling this stuff. Shapes with wood working tools. Oh, it's cutting board plastic if you're you don't have time to collect recyclables.

I don't recall a specific website to that guided me but I do know the wax based end grain sealer came from Amazon in a gallon steel pail. I also sealed some with paint. Wax wins hands down

Inexpensive wood in the truest form is green wood (unseasoned). And that will be regional.
