I bought the DIY upgrade several months ago and it was the best purchase I've made in a long time. What a difference in performance and power. You won't be unhappy with the purchase so stop second guessing yourself. You'll be happy you did it.

I bought my PP a couple of months ago and installed it myself also. I can't say enough good things about it. It's the best thing I bought from SS and wish I had done it years ago when they first came out.

Looks like mostly dust. It should clean up nicely. Welcome to the forum. If you're going to use it a lot, I'd upgrade to the pro headstock. I did and what a difference.
