Drive Shaft Refurbishment
I am refurbishing a drive shaft on a machine from the early 80s. Basically just cleaning it up and replacing the bearings. Just pulled off the old bearings using a HF 20 ton press, easy. It appears possible to remove the grooved|||||||spindle on the shaft where the PolyV belt engages the drive shaft...

Bearing Supplier
Hopefully I am not violating a forum rule but I have a question. I just ordered tow Drive Sheave Assembly bearings from MSC. I paid over $30 a piece. Did I get ripped off? Where do most of y'all source your bearings? Duckman

Re: Upgrading from a Gilmer
I have the retainers but one is in rough shape. No idea how that happened. I got what I paid for. I was considering fabricating one out of aluminum. I am probably going to have to replace the idler shaft too and tht concerns me because of the new type.

Re: Removing Motor Sheaves
I have done the wedge trick on another machine. I thought there might be a different way. The floating sheave moves pretty well. I cleaned the motor shaft and oiled it with 3 in one. Thanks for the response. DUCKMAN

Removing Motor Sheaves
A couple of questions on removing and reassembling the motor sheaves. 1. Does it make any difference which way the spring goes on? Does one end have a larger diameter? If so which end goes towards the motor? 2. What am I looking for on the sheaves that would indicate the sheaves need replacement? 3....

Re: Upgrading from a Gilmer
Thank you for the responses. I guess I will get the kit. I am afraid if I try to piece-meal it off ebay I will not get parts that work together. My $35 greenie (serial number indicates a 53 or 54 production) is becoming more expensive. That kit is dang near $400. But I want a machine for sanding and...

Upgrading from a Gilmer
If I update my Greenie from a Gilmer to PolyV do I need everything in the ShopSmith upgrade kit (#556490, I rebuilt the old motor so am good to go with that)? I am not convinced I need the highspeed bearing quill.

Re: AO Smith Motor Shaft End Nut
The big picture is helpful. thannk you. I have several owners manuals. I am pretty sure they are all from after 1970. At least one is probably after 1980. I have the retainers, A3274. Not in great condition but they should work. If not I will fabricate something that will work out of aluminum stock....

Re: Shaft Keys- Purpose?
Russ, I think I understand. I think I have the Greenie "A". I am pretty sure that replacing the idler shaft and the eccentric bushing will work. Everything I have read indicates the critical specs on the headstock castings has not changed, and I compared measurements between a 1984 headsto...
