I bought a used 1987 Mark V, and everything seems to be working just fine, except, I noticed the spindle knob cannot be removed. It looks like somebody tried either vise grips or a pipe wrench, as some of the knurls are sheared. The set screw can be removed completely. Is the spindle knob left ...

Thanks, I will give that a try. It never occurred to me to use a dowel to hold sandpaper.

The shaft looks good, the color and feel of gun metal. I think the arbor is the trouble, I see rust. I think I need a new arbor.

Arbor fitness

Are the arbors purposely difficult to fit on the Spindle Assembly? Now that the saw blade and arbor is off the spindle, and cleaned and lubricated, how do you put it back on?

That did it. Left handed thread, and the two screwdrivers did the trick.

I found the website for the two bearing quill, thanks. I also found a thread on here for a detailed exploded view of the headstock. I think that's going to come in handy.

Neglected Mark V 1981

I bought a used Mark V, and I'm afraid I bought someone else's problems. The Mark V was bought from an estate sale. After buying the SS, the owner's son, said his Dad was not good at woodworking and hardly used the Shopsmith.
