Re: Shopsmith vs Jacobs MC8K26 Chuck

I looked at the price of a new Jacobs chuck, and if I were in the market, I’d think that $100 is a good deal. But both my 10E and 10ER came with Jacobs 3326 chucks with no detectable wear. After a little cleanup, they both work brilliantly, and look good as well. I only use my newer SS chuck now whe...

Re: Nick's interview with Travis from ShopNation

He'd indicated the castings come from nearby. I'd assumed they came from across the Pacific. That's gratifying. On the downside, he's looking to outsource their machining. I guess that's to be expected; however, I wonder if he needs to increase the volume before he can find a vendor to do the machi...

Re: Set screw torque value in aluminum?

These two documents from NASA concerning screw fastener torque guidelines may be useful to establish some general guidelines. Re: Brand New

I highly recommend beginning your turning journey not with bowls, but with “spindles”. Meaning anything that’s fairly skinny, such as tool handles and the like. A Shopsmith is great for turning these, but bowls are a lot more challenging. Rockler, Woodcraft, and the like sell inexpensive “turning ki...

Re: Planing laminated boards with CF in between?

Carbon-fiber composites are often machined on CNC routers. The router bits designed for that purpose are typically PCD (poly-crystaline diamond) coated carbide. With a CNC, you could machine the tiller to final shape. For merely flattening it, a simple router sled and one of those PCD-coated bits sh...

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Wow, what a journey! The guitar looks great, and I trust that it sounds as good as it looks. I learned a lot from your techniques. My own instinct has always been to get component parts to final shape before assembling. But in many cases, you assembled rough-dimensioned components, and then refined ...

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

I never followed an acoustic guitar build before, so this is fascinating. What's going on in the glue-up with all the C-clamps?

Ah, so! I can see the gaps now, but couldn’t make visual sense of them before.
