Just curious if anyone has done work to improve the dust collection on the jointer. I have the SS supplied dust chute and it seems to get plugged up pretty quick.
Here is a shot of the standard jointer with the dust collector chute removed

The shavings seem to accumulate on the right side of the cutter-head and then pack up into other parts of the casting.
Proposal is to use some plastic to add a deflector, which would hopefully prevent stacking of chips. In doing so the hope would be that the chips would be better directed down and out the chute.

Wish ya wood of had a pic when it's plugged up. Mine doesn't do that. Collection is MUCH better after I let the area under the infeed fill up.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It is being reported that the chute gets clogged. I frankly do not know if mine clogs or not. I do know that if I joint without the DC connected the chips really fly. I don't understand why connecting the DC would SLOW DOWN clip movement unless the flow created by the jointer blades is greater than the DC can handle.

To be clear, its not about the DC itself, but rather that the chute design does not fully evacuate all of the chips in the default setup using the DC3300 and the chute as installed and configured by the factory.dusty wrote:It is being reported that the chute gets clogged. I have been doing a lot of tuning and such on my tools lately, so this is just another step in trying to get them dialed in. I would prefer to not have a bunch of chips piled up in the housing, because its a bit of a pain to clean out and i would be concerned about corrosion and such.
Without the chip collector at all it clears out pretty well, but catches on the SPT lock handle and tends to bunch up. I will see about doing some tests and taking photos.

That is my point. Without the dust collector collected, the chips come flying out of the jointer. I did some investigation and I think I found the culprit. In the main casting there are two ridges upon which the infeed table slides. It appears that regardless of whether or not the dust chute is attached, chips still seem to go out that direction.

Taking a page out of dusty's book, I took some video of the jointer with the dust chute on and off. Obviously, the dust collection hose improved everything that otherwise comes out the bottom of the jointer. However, in both videos you get the chips being shot back towards the front of the unit by going through the area I described above. I think with some plastic, foam, or similar I can seal off the offending region without any loss of performance. I will play around and see what happens.

Mystery solved - my hypothesis proved correct. I temporarily taped in a 1/4" thick x 3 3/4" long piece of scrap that I had. Doing so eliminated all* of the chips from the area in question.

As can be seen, this works quite well. I haven't done exact fitting or anything, but the 1/4" stock I had seemed to fill the gap without impeeding the movement of the infeed table. Moving forward, I will probably tack the piece down with carpet tape. I might consider swapping out for a piece of acrylic just for piece of mind/no wood movement/etc...probably not necessary
*by all, I mean that it didn't get filled with chips. I didn't see any after running a bunch of passes, but I could be missing a few. In reviewing video - as long as I am feeding the stock through at a reasonable rate it seems to catch everything.

Dust Collector Features....
The current design protects the adjustment bolt from being bent by extending below the adjustment knob.
Have two jointers that need a dust collector/ protector for the adjuster bolt.

If you use the above modification then the will be no chips going into the area underneath the infeed section. Based on that, the standard dust chute achieves ~99% collection.
