Now, having said that, I must say that I tested the system by making chips out of a dry soft pine board and I was taking off only about 1/16".
I seldom change the depth of cut on my jointer and that is where it was set when I started this exercise.
I am certain that if I took a deeper cut, I might get more shavings that are not evacuated by the Dust Collector.
I did not witness 100% collection but what was left inside the jointer table was negligible and I saw nothing on the floor or on the Shopsmith.
I thankfully say again: "I have no collection problem with my jointer".
Hmm, I wonder why yours was doing so much better than mine? My jointer has thrown chips as shown in post 7 every time I have used it. Soft dry pine, hard maple, purple heart...all the same. I wonder if your blades are sharper than mine, or perhaps you are feeding the board through significantly slower than I was.

I do suspect that depth of cut has a great deal to do with it. Cuttings are mighty small at 1/16"; more like dust than chips.
The DC hose on mine is only about 4' long. That may be a difference.
Sharp blades are important but I don't think would effect the efficiency of dust collection.
I do believe the principles behind your modification is valid and it obviously improved performance. I would not abandon it if I were you. It can't help but improve.
One question: Does the modification restrict depth of cut at all?

With regard to suction - I am using two hoses connected together, so that certainly may have an effect on the efficiency of suction.
I have made it more "permanent" for now by affixing it with double sided carpet tape. Based on my initial observations it does not affect depth of cut. I supposed if I were to crank *way* out into a tapering scenario it might...will have to take a peek. However, I kinda doubt it. Certainly something to check. The biggest reason I doubt it is that since it is below the level of the lower casting, your workpiece would hit the casting in that theoretical scenario.
I certainly don't plan on abandoning the improvement - it fixed the issue I was having, so I no longer have to futz with vacuuming out area in question. Time saved here = more time for actual woodworking

When I separated the infeed/outfeed tables that cavity was packed full of chips etc.
What I did was take a strip of duct tape(the real stuff, not 'duck tape') and attached it to the bevel on the edge towards the blade, placed about a 1" strip to cover up the adhesive, looped this creating a cylindrical 'pillow' and stuck the remaining tape behind it.
This does the same thing as your block of wood, but can if need be compress or swell to fill any variation in the spacing between the two tables as they move.
I do not have a DC chute so dc was not the 'issue'.

I had considered a pillow arrangement similar to what you mention. In the end, this worked so well the first time that I didn't need to try variations.
Even without the dust chute, I think this prevents the chips from getting jammed in between the tables. They should fall to the floor instead.
