late model motor wiring
Thanks to all that responded on an earlier thread. Thought I would start a new one.
Appears I have an Emerson motor. I assume not reversible as there are only two wires coming off the motor; both black one with blue tag and one with a white tag.
The PO had installed a new power cord (probably came off a non-functional vacuum cleaner) and, presumably confused, cut the motor wires and connected 18swg wires (were a nice red though) to the switch (C headstock but the older switch with pigtails) and motor.
Enthusiasm overpowering logic I removed the end cover to clean inside and now cannot recall how it was all connected.
In particular the overtemp trip on the circuit board.
There is a connector that is accessible under the inspection plate. I think it may be for the hot wire from the switch but if that can be confirmed I would appreciate it.
Jef

There is no overtemp trip on the terminal board. You are probably referring to the start switch.
There should be two male .250 slip on terminals on the outside of the terminal board. Normally only the wiring cover is the only thing removed. The terminal(s) on the back side are for the start capacitor wire and a motor wire. One of the internal motor wires attaches to the outside of the terminal board. The terminals are different sizes(.250, .187) so that helps not mis-wiring them, but if the female terminals are cut off, that will not help. However the external wiring is all .250 terminals, and the internal wires are all .187.
So. there is one male .187 terminal on the internal side of the terminal board and the capacitor lead attaches there.
There is one male .187 terminal on the external side of the terminal board. An internal motor lead attaches there.
The remaining two male .250 terminals on the external side of the terminal board are the power in leads.
There should be one additional internal motor lead, but I do not recall how it is terminated on the internal side of the terminal board.
This is being recalled from memory, but a pix of yours will help to correct any 'mis recollection'!

OK, I did forget the camera so I only have crappy phone photos.
Got back tonight and a few parts I had ordered from Shopsmith had arrived. The power switch had 2 black pigtails that was correct but only one white one and that had 2 male connectors. Is that typical?

So the photo above shows a larger spade connector and that is the one that is causing me problems, what the heck goes to it?
Does it take a white direct from the power cord or via the switch? Is it used at all?

Any help on what wire goes where appreciated.

Well you surprised me with those pix. The previous comments made by me were relevant to a different emerson vintage.
Your pix do match one that I had thought was damaged(terminal missing).
So tomorrow I will take a look at that motor(still disassembled) and get back to you.
I believe the answer will be that the .187 terminals are correct(one on each side of the terminal board), and the pigtailed leads are the power leads.
Let me verify that before you connect anything!
Re the switch, the white pair seems reasonable. The two black 'pigtails' also seems reasonable. I am not real familiar with the newer power cord wiring, so a pix of that and the switch would help me. From your description of the switch, I would expect a white marked wire from the motor and the white wire from the power cord should connect to the white wire male connectors. The blue marked motor lead would connect to one of the black switch 'pigtails' and the black power cord wire to the other black switch 'pigtail'. I assume the 'pigtails' are female or one each(male/female).
To be sure, I need to see the switch leads and the 'pigtails' and both motor pigtails.

I need some info from you.
How many wires are coming out of the motor windings?
Is a wire from the motor windings connected to the terminal on the capacitor that is NOT connected to the terminal board(outside). [Wire C]
Are wires W and B coming from the motor windings?
Does wire M come from the motor windings?

Do you have an ohmeter that can tell the difference between about 5 ohms and about 0.5 ohms?

Now this is getting to be fun.
I do have a multimeter.
The photos below are of the older safety switch and the newer new one.
I also made some rough sketches of the wiring and the components. I shall attempt to add JPG's lettering to each later.
The old switch below.

The new switch (similar but with detachable pigtails)

Another view of the new switch showing the odd white wire with two male ends. Must be gay.

Just found out you can't have more than four images. Drawings follow...

I don't have the instructions that came with the new switch here but it read as if there should have been 2 white pigtails. And, why wouldn't you switch both hot and neutral when the switch is DPST?
I think the pigtails are provided to make connecting the switch easier. I am going to wire this with as few connectors as possible and not use the pigtails.
I am using male/female connectors on the main motor wires to make another swap/rebuild easier without shortening the wires even more.
