A Walking Stick
I found one of these at a yard sale in KY.
It's one side of a fancy horse collar. Think Budweiser Clydesdales.

It will be the top of an inlaid walking stick.
I don't turn, so I'm now in the process of building a simple router jig to turn the stick. Ala Bill Hylton in Router Magic.
When I get the jig built I'll have some pics. Then more as I use it to turn and create cavities for epoxy and turquoise inlays.
We are headed for Okinawa on the 12th of this month, so the build may be prolonged.
Stay tuned.

Thanks, JPG.
We will certainly enjoy the family....especially the 4 and 5 yr olds. Plan to seek out some woodworkers over there. I only speak one foreign language. Wonder how they'd take to my Spanish.
We were scouting for some walnut off of 127 near the TN border when we saw this permanent yard sale. They had a couple old rocking chairs in good shape, too. But I needed space for the wood. Priorities, ya know.

Not a bad price. I got mine for $5.00. But, I thought it was steel. I was going to have it brass plated, when the old guy at the plating shop found out it was brass that had been nickle plated. Cost me $20.00 for him to acid wash it and polish the brass. It's purty now, though.allsas wrote:Also available as new from several sources including Amazon.
Good eye, Good buy, at a garage sale!

Router Lathe and Cane
Here's the router lathe box with the router in place.
I used a Bowl Cutter to rout the cane.

This is the crank end.

Here is the dial to locate the cavities for the inlay. The little square block is on the end of a 1/4" dowel through the dial and in to the box end.

Here's the hame and end cap loosely fitted on the walnut cane. Good fit, by golly!

When we get back, I'll do the inlays.

Ed,
Can't get the pics now. We're about to head out for the night.
The dead end is just a 6X6X3/4 piece of oak with a hole drilled for the lag that holds the end of the stick. And yep, it's lower than the crank end by the amount of taper I needed.
There is no drive. Just crank the crank and manually move the router.
Thanks for looking.
Have a Merrry Christmas. We'll see you next year. We are off to Okinawa for the holidays. Leaving tomorrow.
