This is interesting, but getting a 5/8" hole bored would be a problem(it is hardened).

JPG, they're not that hard. You can easily score one with a file, so I'm sure a machinist could bore a 5/8" hole so you could mount it on a Shopsmith, if that's what you'd want to do. Also, these sockets are less expensive at Enco.

I would guess case hardening(thin). The length(prone to wobble) could be a problem.

I have no need, but the subject was raised in another thread.

P. S. Second thoughts - I think it would be better if a larger diameter sleeve(at least 2") were bored to 1" on one end and 5/8" on the other. A 4" length would provide stability. The 5/8" bore only need to be the length of the ss spindle, and the 1" clear through to the opposite end. The tang(drift) hole would be a good idea!

I think the simplest solution to all of this Morse Taper stuff is to buy a Smithy SuperShop (or one of the originals made by Fox). It has an R8 spindle hole so you can mount anything on it that you can mount on a Bridgeport. Plus it has a threaded nose on the spindle for 2 1/4" x 8TPI accessories like big metal lathe chucks and faceplates. For using #2 or #3 morse taper items, you simply buy the appropriate R8 adapter to accept the taper. And it's got a DC variable speed motor running from 32 to 7200 RPM. And, if you take a piece of 5/8" drill rod you can fashion a spindle similar to the Shopsmith with a tapered flat and mount all of the Shopsmith spindle accessories on it using an 5/8" R8 collet.

If ya gonna go to all that effort, why not just get a Bridgeport!?:D They be easier to 'find' anyway!:rolleyes:

Well you can't saw or turn wood on a Bridgeport very well and they don't come with casters.
