Personally, I wouldn't let him in the shop, let alone let him mess with any of my tools. Centre to centre is the norm. Although, as the years progress, I have learned to ask 'why do you want it that way' when I know the person asking isn't int he trade (whatever the trade is). Usually, there is a better way to accomplish the end goal without the less-than-knowledgeable 'micro-managing' that many people employ.

Hang in there, bigsky! You were correct!

Now we both know, when asked to do a job like that, folks not having the capability to do such a job, may not know how to properly explain the specs.

In hindsight it would be a good idea to make a prototype for his evaluation by drilling some holes in scrap. Thanks for the lesson Big Sky. I spent a week in East Glacier 2 years ago...as close as you can get to heaven on earth. I'm assuming of course based on your moniker that you live in Montana :)

I am agreement with others here as I would have also measured center to center. I would say that the "hole" incident is his loss and your gain. Maybe one day he will come around and apologize for being so rude.

Now, when I carefully reread what is stated here, I don't know either. It is stated that the holes were drilled 1 5/16 on center but were too far apart to satisfy the needy neighbor.

If the holes had been drilled 1 5/8" on center, the land in between the holes would have been 1 5/16" wide but would have been even further apart.

I don't know. Somebody is confused (including me). I'm just thankful that I was not the helpful neighbor.

LESSON LEARNED: Don't do woodworking favors for needy neighbors who don't want to stick around and help (or even watch).

I agree with Dusty on this.

If it's important to them then they can stick around and help out "supervise?". If it's not important enough for them to make time and stick around and help/watch/supervise, then It's not important enough for me to make time to do the project.

I used to work in a factory that made wood shelving. We had to measure from the center of a hole to the center of a hole. So you were correct in how you did the job. Your neighbor must of been smoken crack that day.

I think I know the source of your 'confusion'.

In spite of Mark's consternation over inconcise instructions, like all the rest of us, he has a bit of 'confucius' within.]The holes were too far apart[/B]. There was exactly 1" between the edges of each hole. I had drilled the holes 1 5/16" center to center. He wanted 1 5/16" in the island between the holes."

I believe it more accurate say the holes were too close to each other.

Yes Dusty I believe he wanted 1 5/8" ctc.
