I recently began carving crosses in the celtic style. I got a couple of slabs of spalted maple from a friend, then made one to thank him. Then I made another, and currently have about a dozen on the go. I made the one (below) for my church, The Church Of The Ascension in Langley, B.C., and it was dedicated last Sunday.
Used the SS to do some of the initial shape preparationa nd much of the sanding. The finish is umpteen coats of Tung Oil, first time I have used it.
My little enterprise is to be called 'Knots And Crosses - Carvery'

Well, if I charged $1,000 for the piece, I wouldn't make minimum wage (currently $10.25 CDN), but I found that the work itself is very meditative.mrhart wrote:...How much time ina carving like that?
I did use the following 'short cuts':
1. I printed the pattern from the computer, then used carbon-paper to trace the design on the wood. this is very time-consuming, and I am considering hacking an old printer to move the wood directly under the print-head. I looked into direct-transfer paper (mostly for iron-on transfers to cloth), but didn't like the resulting mess.
2. I confess to using a Dremel to hog out the background down to about 3/8" depth, although all the actual knot-carving was done by chisel, knife, rasp, file, finer file, sandpaper, finer sandpaper, even finer sandpaper, dental picks (to get into the tight corners). Then several layers of Tung Oil, with steel-wool between. Still took lots of time.
I have been looking at CNC machines, but then... it wouldn't be 'hand-carved', would it? Thanks for the kind words.
