Need Model # help
Is there any way to know which model a Shopsmith is by the serial no or by the model no. The guy on the phone a few states away does not know what he has and says that the model no is 521968. The serial no is 05-31-01 so it could be a 510 520. I am not sure when they quit selling the model 500? He had to get a magnifying glass to read those. I am interested in purchasing another 510 or 520 but do not want to drive that distance just to look at it. The poor guy is not much help and just does not know what he has.

On the Shopsmith website, it says that the model 510 became the primary 5-in-1 tool in 1996 (which I'd interpret as meaning the model 500 was discontinued then, although that isn't exactly clear). And, the model 520 was introduced in 1999.
For certain though, the 500 had a smooth table saw surface, while the 510/520 are ribbed and the table insert is red, not plain aluminum. But sometimes getting a clear answer from someone is difficult. I once asked a guy if the Shopsmith at an auction was grey or green. He said grey, but it turned out being gold.

In a word, NO. All the head stocks of the 505,510 and 520 are the SAME. It's the tables that are different.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

And to make things even better old machines can be upgraded. So if someone looked at my serial number they would say it's a 500, not so, it is 1976 headstock upgraded to a two bearing quill with a 520 upgrade. Same thing for my 1979 machine, and hey my 1992 head stock sits as a 500, so when getting things used you might well find just about anything.

500 - Rip fence has NO slot on top and smooth sides and three 1/4" holes in the sides and a 5/8" hole on top.
505 - see 510
510 - Rip fence has a single t-sliot on top and ribbed sides and three 1/4" holes in the sides and NO hole on top.
520 - Rip fence has two t-slots on top and a feather board slot on reach side and NO holes on sides or top.
A 500 will have a single auxiliary table.
A 505 - see 500
A 510 will have two floating tables and an auxiliary table and tubes.
A 520 - see 510
The quill you will have to gamble on.
The auxiliary table will be narrow for early 500 or may be wide for later/upgraded ones(not a good indicator).
Not sure if a seller who 'does not know' would be much help describing the round/square 'rails', but that might be worth a try.
The table dimensions will cull out a 500.(14w x19d)

Looks like you missed the upgraded 500 fence with t-slot on top etc.
