While on the subject of quill run out, Skip Campbell has an article on his web site from 1951 regarding manufacture of the 10er and run out on the 10er before shipment from the factory. Each 10er was checked for run out before shipment and those with over .0015" were rejected. The author of the magazine article says while he watched the inspection process, no machine exceeded .0005" and that looking at the log book over the preceding week none exceeded .001".

Quill best deal
Shopsmith only list the quill assembly. No bearings or shaft parts listed. Any hints or tricks to a quill rebuild? Last year the tension spring broke on my belt sander. I tried find information and a replacement spring in the end got a new assembly from Shopsmith. maybe I can look at it next week end. back on the road for work.................
New bearings
Got new bearings today, after looking at the quill this week. It looks like the shaft is strait the play is in the outer or back bearing. Got two new bearings from the locale bearing supply. Bought the best they had...
I hope this will bring things back into tolerance. Will try to post pictures. So far so easy. Although I do have a Bearing press.

I am finding about 20% of the quill shafts I test have greater than .002" runout. I discarded 7 more quill shafts this week due to excessive runout or the shaft beening bent. I have a modified headstock just for testing the quill shafts and the quills with the shaft installed.
