When I broke the last Power coupler I had a few years ago, I quickly made a short jack shaft platform that set on the way tubes and used belts to drive several different SPTs until I could get another Power Coupler. This also allowed me to adjust/change the min/max SPT speed by using different size pulleys. The jack shaft was about the same length as the Power Coupler. I used link belts for the jack shaft pulleys and adjusted the SPTs to provide the proper belt tension on the SPT side.

I have LoveJoy couplers available if I find myself without a Power Coupler. The 2 hubs and spider are cheaper than the Power Coupler. The LoveJoy couplers are shorter in length and I have used them up to 10,000 RPM without any major problems. I use them on my MINI Shopsmith in place of the longer Power Coupler. They need the same alignment procedure as the Power Coupler.

I have found the LoveJoy couplers are better equiped than any other power coupler attachment I have seen including the Power Coupler and it is safer, cheaper, shorter and can handle the HP from any Shopsnh motor which allows more room for SPTs on the quill side for the headstock, Example is the belt sander. You can play with the Spider hardness material

I am still using my original power coupler that came with the Mark V in 1989. Don't know how much better one can be made than the OEM.

Bearings are only used when one thing spins and the other stays stationary which isn't the case here. Anyway the only true way without getting come awfully complicated maths done is to go ahead and try it. Will put it to the test over the next few months..
thanks again for everyone's feedback.
Remember the jointer runs at 3450, not 1000 like the bandsaw, not sure what speed the planner runs at.

Sorry the joner operate from the lower Idler shaft which is 1.6 times faster than the quill shaft, I operate my joiners at around 8,000 RPM

Love Joy Couplers

You can buy a headstock 5/8" hub, an inset spider and a 1/2" and a 5/8" hub for the various SPTs. You can get the 1/2" & 5/8" hubs in either L075 & L090 model sizes. I use all the same model hubs and insert spider. There is a set screw in each hub that fastens the hub. The key way can be ignored. Yes, the price has about doubled since I brought mine from Grainger.

I am a little confused about this coupling method.

I think that I understand the individual hubs]this search[/URL] but this may be more than I wanted to get into.
