Today in my shop (bandsaw notches)

Hi,

I had to cut some notches today and figured it was time for one of my tips of the day. The notches are so I could use some blind dado cuts and still have the "shelf" full depth.

I used a Tru-Grip tool guide as a fence and set the fence to blade dimension to 1/4" using a brass bar and an inside tooth on the blade. In this case I wanted to take a notch out that was 1/4" x 1/4", it could just as easily been 3/8" x 3/8". You can also do rectangular notches also.

As you can see I just free handed a square to help me remember that the workpiece had to have that operation preformed on it.

In this case I used some green tape to mark how far to cut.

Not the workpiece is stopped at the leading edge of the cut so the cut is measured from there.

Hi again,

Next I did the first cut.

Then flipped the wood to make the second cut. Worked around the workpiece until all the cuts were made.

I needed two workpieces like that, didn't take long and the only thing I wish I had had was a zci. As it was I used a pencil/eraser to clear the cut-offs. Have some some where in the shop but of course I couldn't find them today.

This is my old bandsaw equipped with the carter guide system so it would be hard to identify from the pictures. The guide bushings upgrade cost more the the new saw did back in the early 1970's. I did get a shopsmith bandsaw last year and it has been upgraded with the dual bearings so that might be hard to identify too.
