Mortise bit sharpening

I recently purchased a used Shopsmith mortise chisel and bit set with the related hardware. I am looking for more information about sharpening the drill bits. I searched these forums, and i found this link: http://www.woodshoptips.com/tips/070102/page12.htm.

Does anyone have other advice regarding mortise bit sharpening?

Peachtree Woodworking has a nice mortising chisel sharpening set. Does a pretty good job.

Hi Hank,

You don't have to go too crazy to tune these up really. The chinese mortising set I got from Shopsmith had a lot of exterior tool marks on the chisels and I would suggest flattening the sides a little equally to polish the cutting edge and get off the worst of the tool marks (just as you would first flatten the back of any new chisel) then use one of the hand grinders to hone the inside bevel. Just a few turns should do it. Some people are afraid to flatten the exterior of the chisel for fear of changing the stated dimension, but in reality you will be fitting the tenon to the final mortise anyway and a few thousanths will not matter and it matters a lot to the performance of the chisel. I spray the tool with a little teflon lubricant before I use it and I make sure the table is well braced especially with the larger bits and chisels. Good luck.
