can anyone tell me what I have here?

Post by furniturebypete »

I have a scroll saw like the one in the image here. I cannot find out anything about it on the SS site. Does anyone know when these were produced? And more importantly, does anyone know the blade size? I want to order some new blades and don't know the size at the moment. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I don't understand why this forum wont let me attach a picture (I have to link to a picture? What the...) so here's a link to a craigslist ad for the saw I have: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/tls/3043534542.html

Jigsaw

This is the Shopsmith jigsaw, not a scroll saw. I owned one for many years and sold it because I never used it but a few times. If you do a search on eBay you will find the blades listed from time to time; however, there are none currently listed. I recommend you contact Shopsmith and they can tell you who makes blades that will fit it. Below is the Shopsmith FAQ link regarding the jigsaw:

Shopsmith Mark 4, Mark 7, Mark 5 shorty, planer, bandsaw, jointer, belt sander. Grizzly central dust collection 4" PVC trunk. Shopsmith Routing System stand-alone overhead pin router.

The jigsaw used standard plain end 5" blades. If you google "shopsmith jigsaw owners manual" you'll find a PDF copy of the Magna jigsaw manual.

Thanks everyone, this is helpful! My hope for this saw is to dedicate it for cutting metal, since my metal cutting needs are minimal. Will it cut metal with the right blade? Thanks again!

Oh I just saw in the faq that it will cut metal, now I just need to track down the right blade. Can anyone tell me what type of blade I should be looking for in terms of tpi?

I'm not sure if it's the correct way to use the jig saw but I remove the upper arm and install standard hand held jig saw blades in the lower mount and it works just fine if the blade is stiff enough.

In this configuraiton, it is referred to a s a 'Saber Saw', and it works quite well on thin wood. Haven't tried it on metal.
