Scored a 510 yesterday-gently (ab)used!

I got my 1st Shopsmith ( a nice Mark V 500) a few months back, and never got the yearning for a better fence/table off my mind. It's fully reconditioned now.

Well, on CL yesterday I saw a 510 (kinda rough) and after a thorough inspection (missing several parts and the speed control works but arms on porkchop need Bill Mayo's mod)....I talked the guy down to $150!

I will need a few parts: (1-27" tube, the 2 "T- fittings" on top of the telescoping poles, a shaper insert,the carriage hand-wheel, and an upper saw guard). But the headstock seems really good and has actually been maintained!

I'm ecstatic....my better half-not so ecstatic.

Any tips on refurbing the table/ tube system (that's about all I'm not familiar with)?

What is Bill Mayo's mod for the porkchop

It corrects the bent arms, so common on the porkchops, that make the speed control difficult to turn. It's basically a bolt that prevents the arms from bending again once they are bent back into their correct position.

If you search, you will find lots of references to it on the forum. For the price of an email to Bill (i.e. free) he will send you a bolt, a couple of lock washers and two nuts. You drive out the roll pin that holds the two pices of the pork chop together (the hardest part for me) and replace with the items Bill will send you. It will prevent further wear to the teeth on the porkchop. I did this about 2 months ago and am very happy. Much smoother operation, more solid feel especially going from high speed to low speed. I would recommend people do this as preventative care even if the porkchop is in excellent condition. Don't wait until the pork chop gets worn.

The legs tend to splay out. The screw/nut prevents that.

Once 'splayed', the legs need to be returned to original positioning.

Best prevention is careful(non-aggressive) adjusting towards slow.

Okay, inquiring minds want to know. What the hell is a "pork chop". Everyone talks about it but I don't have a clue even though I have owned a Brownie, a MK Vii and now a 510. Please post a picture so I know what this is?

The "pork chop" is the quadrant. It is the lever with the teeth and flat spring. The left speed control has the bolt, washers (later added) and nut. The right shows how the a bent leg allows the worm gear to wear on the side of the quadrant teeth.
