Newbee Intro/Question

Post by iang »

Hi All,
Have just found out about the Shopsmith and I'm hooked. Apparently over here in the UK they aren't well known. I have just been givenhttp://www.shopsmith.net/forums/images/ ... iggrin.gif a Shopsmith V (cir 1957) a green one, pretty well used but I looks mostly intact. Itching to power it up but what should I check before switching on? I will first need to replace the power cord.
Can you give me some idea of, webpages, threads etc where I can find parts lists and layouts for the powertrain.

Thanks and regards
Ian

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the heads up Finally got the cover off seems the drive belt to the quill? has had it,although the v belt is also looking tired. The motor cable is in desperate need of replacing as the insulation is shot, although has done well if original. Otherwise looks fairly clean inside - the pulleys on the motor and shaft are stiff so looks like a complete cleanup and oil, anything special I should look out for?

Does anyone know of suppliers in the UK or someone who would ship to the UK as searches on Google have so far drawn a blank. Otherwise does anyone have the specs for the belts so I can get them made up over here?

Cheers

The UK distributor is Craft Supplies in Derbyshire. That should maybe read "was" because their website doesn't seem to push the brand and the Craft Supplies name seems to have fallen off the "International Distributors" list on the SS web site. They do have some stock that may be useful though & I bought some parts from them recently so they'll still be worth a call.

No luck with Craft supplies i'm afraid, only a few odds and ends left. No reply from Shopsmith in US but still hoping they can ship at sensible rate.

Otherwise I may have found someone willing to make the belts to order only snag is I need the spec of the belts, can anyone help? (Gilmer and main belts please)

Thanks Ian
