non shopsmith 5 foot tubes

I just yesterday received the tubes I ordered.

The only test I have had time to do so far was to place them on my table saw table and roll them. They were a bit "off" from straight - evidenced by a slight gap in the center as the tubes were rolled across the table. It appears to be about 1/16" to maybe 1/8". I'll measure and report when I get back to the shop (have a few minor medical issues to take care of first).

At first glance the tubes appear to be as well finished as those from Shopsmith. I haven't tried them in the SS tables yet.

More information once I get time to check them out further.

Methinks a 1/16" to 1/8" 'bend'(gradual over 5" and not caused by a 'kink') would not be detrimental.

Am I correct that most setups involving the 5' tubes would also include both the main and aux tables and probably the legs as well and mainly provide support for floating tables?

Could that gap be caused by the table not being flat?:eek:

Put the two tubes together and rotate one of them while watching for a gap.

Good Point! If the gap does not move to the ends and back per revolution,(or alternate between two 'gap' dimensions) it is not bent.

Yup, they are straight. Unless you are talking about my old tubes; they are not.

Can you determine which are new and which are old or which are straight and which are not?

I may need to alter the brackets that hold these tubes. They are scratching the tubes.

Not from as cursory look at yer pix.

Surely you have not already forgotten Ed's string and two corks method!:p

first two pix are new and last two are old tubes. (maybe)

No, I have not forgotten. In fact I used it to ascertain that the old tubes were bent before I ordered the new ones. Good tip it was.
