Rip Fence Infeed Clamp Adjuster Problem

Post by fredsheldon »

My Rip Fence Infeed Clamp Adjuster screw rod threaded sleeve ( or what ever it's called) is spinning in it's hole and I can't see how it can be repaired. In the parts diagram it doesn't show it being a repairable item. So I think I have to order the Rip Fence Base which I assume contains an already installed screw rod and handle. Am I on the right track here.

Fred,

No mention which version you are referring to. But, the fastest way to get your question answered is to call Shopsmith.

Well after spending 30 minutes with Jan on the phone it seems the diagram is outdated and there is suppose to be a rollpin holding the handle onto the threaded rod for the infeed clamp adjuster that you drive out so you can unscrew the handle and remove the threaded rod to be able to get to the threaded sleeve that is pressed into the base which in my case has worked loose and is just spinning in the drilled hole. This part is not serviceable and they suggest I glue it back into the hole to prevent it from spinning. It is pressed in from the factory. Since I think there is a good chance I will destroy the threaded rod trying to remove the handle which does not seem to have a rollpin I have made a major decision.

I am going to upgrade to a 520 rather than spend $60 for a new base or $100 on ebay for a used fence. :D :D

I am not about to do anything that would prevent anyone from upgrading to the 520 so maybe I should not make this offer BUT I have what you need to fix your problem. The handle has been removed and I do not have the handle or the roll pin but if you need what I do have just give me a mailing address and I'll send it.

What I have is #235 on the IPB and does not include 233, 234,237, 240 or 241. It does include the screw and insert that the screw threads into and the lever that screw controls.

Dusty, thanks for the offer but I have already submitted my order for the 520 upgrade:) I'm not sure we are talking about the same parts. I'm referring to the small knob with the two wings which is below the locking lever. The diagram does not show the threaded rod, which is about 2 to 3 inches long, which pushes against the infeed clamp. It passes through a threaded sleeve that is pressed into a drilled out hole in the base. It is this threaded sleeve that is spinning in the drilled out hole and is pressed in at the factory. I can't remove the knob because it is stuck on the end of the threaded rod and mine doesn's seem to have a rollpin that can be driven out. I would have to grip the threaded rod from the inside and try to twist the handle off, which is what I'm going to try to do tonight but without worring about breaking something since I have the 520 upgrade coming. Am I missing somthing here. Thanks, Fred

Yup, you are. You are missing the parts that you needed to fix your 510 fence. The parts that you need are factory installed into the base #235. The parts that I do not have you do.

But since you have the 520 upgrade coming, you won't need these. I'll just put them back into the salvaged parts box.

PS After rereading, you may not have all the required parts. If you cannot remove the handle from that screw (no roll pin), then you don't have a handle to put back on.

Here is the threaded sleeve that fits into the hole in the base of the Rip Fence that was twisting in the hole. It seems to be tapered but maybe not and is ribbed. I think what may have happened is the fence was dropped on it's knob by the previous owner which punched the sleeve out of it's hole. I suspect I did a fairly good job of reaming out the hole as I turned the knob a hundred revolutions trying to get it to grab and tighten up the infeed lock  I epoxied the sleeve back into the hole and drove it in with a hammer, which is what shopsmith support suggested I do. I will find out tomorrow if this fixes my problem. Also, you can see my knob does not have a rollpin to hold it on to the shaft even though the diagram shows one. I could not remove the knob even using visegrips on the threaded shaft. I suspect this part rarely fails which is why SS does not have replacement parts available.

Well the epoxy glue seems to be doing the job of holding the sleeve in place, it's not twisting in the hole anymore and I can tighten the infeed lock now. I'm suprised SS support hasn't seen this problem before so they could offer this solution to those like me. The main problem with my model is that the handle can't be removed, which is the only way to remove the sleeve and threaded rod if need be. I was able to reach the sleeve with a small stick to apply the epoxy and then shove it back into the hole. So, do I cancel my upgrade to a 520 or go ahead and do the deed. Will I be please with the upgrade.

Will I be pleased with the upgrade, you ask. I don't know about you but I was; however, I chose not to upgrade the shorty (before it became a shorty).

Some of the features of the 520 are really nice but there is a really nice price tag on the upgrade as well. I am thankful that I have my 520. I would not think of going back to the 510 but I will also not tell you that there is anything I can do with the 520 that you can not do with the 510.

If I was going to go for a PowerPro, I would have to go all the way. I would do that upgrade on a 520. Why? Just Cuz!.
