It too bad they are no longer a true Minnesota Beer. But we still have Grain Belt Premiun and Grainbelt Nordeast, which contrary to popular belief outside this area, are actually good beers. Hence the "premium" in their title.

Nope. Not this time. Had a Big Sky IPA form Missoula Montana.

We did camp out in bear country 2 weeks ago at Bear Head Lake State Park. Went to the North American Bear Center in Ely on a rainy day. IIRC, had a sampler row of ales at brew pub while there.

Started a test strip half covered with a stain. When stain is ready for additional coat I will add 3 finishes, they may be too similar to learn much. Going to look at BLO, Watco Danish Oil Finish (Golden Oak), and Minwax Tung Oil Finish.

After a very good day, with a fair amount of frustration thrown in, I have put on a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil and it looks pretty good so far. Instruction said it would dry in 12-18 hours. I have never used BLO before, so am I done or is there more to do to get the best result?

And do I finish the insides? I used excess in rags to on them, but do not know what is norm. Kind of wish I had not split the top drawer into 2 parts, makes it hard to reach bottom.

Thanks. When I was a kid I had a 410 shot gun and was given a bottle of linseed oil for caring for the stock. I did not know of spontaneous combustion possibility then, but had no problem...just lucky I guess.

I looked on the web for guidance on what next with BLO and found this:

Once a day for a week
Once a week for a month

at http://www.wwch.org/technique/finishes/oilfin.htm. The author then went on to offer a technique that is much more complex using Watco Danish Oil finish. In another article by same guy he says, referring to Tung Oil or BLO, "...finish should not be built up beyond about 2 coats".

So I am still thinking about next step. His more complex process suggested wet sanding with 400 (and higher numbered grits for later coats) when reapplying oil and to add oil to the sand paper as needed. My last sandpaper was 220, so some form of additional smoothing sounds like good idea.

She likes it. Told her it needs more coats of BLO so she will be letting me take it back for more finishing work. I may have to pry it away from her though:)

Great work, Sam! You and your wife both should be very proud of that. I can't offer any tips on finishing. That's still a mystery to me too!

Your wife will never notice what you are stressing about. She will find it perfect owing to the fact that you handmade it. Sweet thought.

Last year Ed (reible) shared Stars and Kites Forever with us. I took it on as a good project to practice ripping on my new to me SS. I found out that I got more practice painting than anything else:D

Anyway with a lot of glitches and do-over's I have finished a set of them for my brothers' families, my kid's family, and nieces and nephews. Done in time for family gathering in Kansas on the 4th!!
