It's going in a playroom (where I'm near certain that my 9 and 3 year olds will destroy it) so I'm not that concerned with the stripes. I actually just wanted to play around and see how the colors turned out. I suspect it will be ok, especially since I plan on using contrasting stains on the vertical supports (ebony) and the shelves (single coat of walnut). I saw it in a magazine and thought it looked fun. One day I'll finish the project and post pictures.
Thanks to everyone that offered advice. Hopefully, one day, I'll be good enough to use the hardwood strips and make an heirloom. Until then, I'm just happy playing in the garage when I get a chance.

Hi dear am newbie here and i want to say that Remove the plywood and replace it with proper decking boards. These are thicker and more resistant to weathering. Plywood was never made for this purpose. Pressure treated (green tinted ones) aren't quite as good as natural cedar, but much less expensive. And all exposed wood should be at least weather treated every year or two to stop it from rotting.
