I find that non-detergent oil is obsolete for just about everything in this world today. We have specialized oils that handle all those jobs. Air compressors recommended non-detergent oil for years, but today, many of them spec "synthetic compressor oil" instead if you want long life. The compressor oils are just a specialized job non-detergent oil, but synthetics are superior to petroleum oil, so you can see why things are changing.
Today, I use synthetic lubricants almost exclusively. Where 3-in-1 oil, or something similar worked 30 years ago, I now use synthetic spray oil. It lasts longer, lubricates better, and seems to collect less dust.
