V with 520 table max cut

On the model 500, you can get the 3 1/2" depth of cut by extending the quill the full length, locking it there, and then dropping the table over the blade. I'm not sure if this will work with the wider tables on the 505/510/520.

I think not. Without going to the shop to verify, I believe the bottom edge of the 510 table contacts the top of the headstock thus setting maximum depth of cut.

After testing this out, you can get slightly more than 3.5 inches depth of cut on a 520 with the blade through the table insert; however you must remove the lower blade guard and extend the quill. This allows the 520 table to clear the headstock. However, the lower blade guard (specifically the part that pops up on the springs) still prevents the table from dropping more than 3.25. With the lower blade guard removed, I get 3 and 20/32nds blade height; any more and the table is interfered with by the quill.

all of these efforts, extending the quill, removing the lower guard, running the blade off the side of the table, seem to me to be compromising safety. Why not just cut halfway through your 4x4, flip it over, and cut through the other half?

I agree 100%. I was simply trying to answer the question of what was the maximum achievable blade height with the 520 table.
