Restoring the 1956 Greenie SLOWLY
I hate that it's taking soooo long to get this party started, but life keeps gettin' in the way.
Paint scheme so far. non Metallic Hunter Green for the legs only, hammer-tone green and silver elsewhere. Nice looking stainless hardware too. I love the ease of stainless.

I really like the paint job. Your color scheme lends a new meaning to the term "greenie".wiredone wrote:I hate that it's taking soooo long to get this party started, but life keeps gettin' in the way.

It will be like a new unit when you finish.
Are you installing new bearings throughout or are you reusing parts?

This will be a total restore. IF and only IF the bearings are absolutely perfect will they be retained. Half the battle is finding decent proper bearings.
I use all the known bearing houses, but still have a problem finding the C-1 bearings for my 10ER projects. I like to buy in 1 shot and save shipping.
I've read all the bearing discussions here and elsewhere, but end up more confused and conflicted than when I started.
This unit was to be my own personal one, but I just bought another 56 last week that is only a month younger than this one, and it runs sweet but looks like the devil. I am now leaning towards a brownie to keep for myself, I have a 1960 that is in REAL bad shape.
I got real lucky and sold my 59 Greenie 2 weeks ago and actually made a little profit. which of course rolled into the latest purchase. The "new" one came with a jigsaw too.

I share your confusion about bearings, even when I have the numbers the catalogs seem to show many variations. The prices online are so much better that I feel conflicted, I guess being able to take them in to someone who knows what they're doing has its value- especially since I don't know what I'm doing at this point.
Nice paint and the stainless hardware gives it the finishing touch.

Whenever I need parts of this nature, I go to my local Motion Industries outlet.cranehead wrote:I share your confusion about bearings, even when I have the numbers the catalogs seem to show many variations. I'd never heard of them and yet I find there's one in my neighborhood. I'll be checking them out.dusty wrote:Whenever I need parts of this nature, I go to my local Motion Industries outlet.

I try to buy ABEC3 rated bearings that normally have "Precision" on the box. This is a close rating to the old "C1" rating. I buy most of my bearing from usabearingsbelts on Ebay. Outstanding customer service and really quick shipping.wiredone wrote:This will be a total restore. IF and only IF the bearings are absolutely perfect will they be retained.
